Reef Ball Project
In 2003 Nature Foundation was able to deploy 120 Reef Balls in the St. Maarten Marine Park as part of its Artificial Reef Program with support from the Dutch Recovery Fund and the collaborative efforts of the Reef Ball Foundation.
The Reef Balls provide an additional artificial habitat that helps to restore and enhance the ecological value of the marine park. A Reef Ball is an artificial reef module that imitates the appearance and function of natural coral reefs. The Reef Balls have openings and canals that make an ideal living environment for a great variety of marine species. The Reef Balls vary on composition, thickness, size and height so that each module is different for various goals and applications, just like natural reefs!
