St. Maarten does not have any terrestrial protected areas. But there are areas of remarkable splendour that qualify for the status of protected area. These areas could be made into hillside nature parks because of their sheer natural beauty and the variety of plant life found there. Areas proposed as terrestrial nature parks are the hill tops in the entire Cul de Sac valley and Geneva Bay - Back Bay. Hikers access these areas by trails in the hills or that snake along the coastline.
